When Children Ask Why?

Children as they grow begin to ask the question “Why?” along with the “What? Who? Where? Do we have to?”

I believe that curiosity is an essential ingredient to learning.  And when curiosity is aroused properly, this natural desire to know will encourage them to explore the world.  You don’t have to force it.  Kids would love to learn if given the right, positive, stimulating environment.

Solar System

This photo shows how a multi-sensory approach to learning is being used in our preschool.  Aside from looking at the pictures of the solar system, the kids were made to make a model using clay.

The kids delighted in the activity as they asked questions while they were making their model.

Multi-sensory activities stimulates all the senses and increase their curiosity.

Here are some questions that kids ask that amuses me greatly.

“Who is God?  I can’t see him.  Can God see me?”‘

“Why are they angry with the giant?”  asked one girl when she heard the story of the Brave Little Tailor.

“Why do we have to sleep early?”

“Can I just eat tomorrow?”  my nephew would sigh looking at the plate of food before him.

“Why do mommy’s have big a tummy when they have baby? ”

“Why is the moon sleeping during the day?”

And the endless questions of children goes on and on and on.  Do you get impatient?  Ooops, don’t.  Remember when children asks why be thankful that they do.  For it is a wonderful sign that their minds are thinking and analyzing and working. Keep a child’s curiosity alive and you would have made a tremendous contribution to his learning.
