Nursery Rhymes

Nursery rhymes will always be an important part in our classroom.  I’ve observed how the preschool kids love reciting rhymes. And when you teach them actions that go along with the rhymes, you can see the delight in their faces when they do it.

The Importance of Nursery Rhymes

• Provide entertainment for children
• Teach children skills through words and actions.
• Teaches the child to listen
• Pitch, rhythm, frequency of music enhances language acquisition
• Develop fine motor skills
• Allow freedom of speech and expression
• Teach children concepts, body parts, alphabets, counting and numbers.

  

Old Mother Goose

Old Mother Goose,

When she wanted to wander,

Would ride through the air

On a very fine gander.

There Was an Old Woman

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,

Seventeen times as high as the moon.

Where she was going I couldn’t but ask it,

For in her hand she carried a broom.

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I,

“Where are you going up so high?”

“To sweep the cobwebs out of the sky!”

And I’ll be with you by-and-by.”

The Muffin Man

Oh, do you know the muffin man,

The muffin man, the muffin man?

Who lives in Drury Lane?

Bow Wow, Says the Dog

Bow wow says the dog,

Mew, mew, says the cat,

Grunt, grunt goes the hog,

And squeak goes the rat.

Tu-whu says the owl,

Caw, caw, says the crow.

Quack, quack, says the duck,

And what the sparrows say, you know.

If

If all the world were apple pie,

And all the sea were ink,

And all the trees were bread and cheese,

What would we have for drink?

There was a Crooked Man

There was a crooked man, and he went a crooked mile,

He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;

He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,

And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
